Carboline’s Industrial Fireproofing Products
It is widely known that Carboline is the industry leader in industrial maintenance coatings products. But what you may not know, is that Carboline is the leader in intumescent and cementitious fireproofing products for industrial applications.
Products such as Pyrocrete 241 and 240 are cementitious “UL Exterior Rated” fireproofing products that have been around for years and are used by a variety of industrial facilities for the protection of their structural steel. Petrochemical and oil refineries use Pyrocrete as they can meet UL1709 “Rapid Temperature Rise” ratings.
A cementitious coating contains Portland cement as one of its components. The cement is held onto the applied substrate by a binder. Carboline’s Thermo-Lag family of products, including Thermo-lag 3000 are intumescent fireproofing products that also meet UL 1709 “Rapid temperature Rise” rating. Thermo-Lag products are epoxy based, thermally activated, subliming coating. These products are spray applied directly to structural columns, beams, vessel skirts, under decks, electrical raceways. They can be applied by UL design standards to provide 1 through 4-hour fire ratings and can be used in interior and exterior industrial environments.
An intumescent coating is a fire retardant coating which when heated, produces nonflammable gasses which are trapped by the film, converting them to a foam, thereby insulating the substrate.
WHY PROTECT STEEL FROM FIRE?
Steel retains only about 50% of its strength when it reaches 1100F, (600C). Temperatures during fires can easily reach 1300 F within the first 10 minutes. If steel is unprotected, the structure usually collapses.
Industrial building codes and insurance carriers require certain beam, column, floor, wall and roof assemblies to have a fire-resistance rating which is determined based on standard fire tests. The necessary fire resistance ratings can be achieved with the application of Carboline’s Pyrocrete and Thermo-Lag family of fireproofing products.
